Financial Literacy

Many existing materials around financial literacy, especially those sponsored by financial institutions, assume that a fairly ‘traditional’ path will be taken by students – further education, career, salary, mortgage, family, career progression and healthy retirement.

Whilst the majority of students still aspire to this life path, there are a significant minority that will be excluded from it.  There are, for example, around one million families in the UK who do not have access to simple current accounts.

This set of twelve financial literacy lessons acknowledge this reality and are designed to cover the full range of financial experiences that will face all students. For example – basic bank accounts, doorstep lenders and credit unions all feature in the lessons.

They have been designed for use with pupils during key stage 3.

There are twelve one-hour sessions which include a PowerPoint and other resources.

They are designed to be run without much prior knowledge of the particular subject and any background information is provided. Some of the lessons require access to Internet, but alternatives are suggested where Internet is not available.

The sessions have been designed to be as inclusive as possible and to recognise the reality of different ways in which families and individuals manage their finances.
